Manual Handling

Duration: 3 hours

Course description and objectives:

Did you know that in the UK, over 6 ½ million days are lost due to musculoskeletal disorders? And at least a quarter of these are easily preventable by adopting the correct manual handling techniques. In this workshop, learners can perform the correct manual handling techniques to prevent injuries. They will be able to:​

  • Define what is meant by the term ‘manual handling’​
  • Identify the health problems that occur from poor manual handling​
  • State the causes of the problems​
  • List the checks to take before moving an object​
  • Demonstrate the correct handling techniques

Abrasive Wheels

Duration: 3 hours

Course description and objectives:

More than half of the injuries from improper use of abrasive wheels could be prevented with proper training and safety assessments.​

By the end of this workshop, learners will be able to select, mount and use abrasive wheels safely. Through a mixture of instructor-led learning, group discussions, and practical demonstrations, learners will be able to demonstrate they can:​

  • State the regulatory requirements and correctly identify and mitigate against hazards​
  • Describe the various wheel types and their speed markings​
  • List the methods of storage, handling and transportation​State the testing methods and how they would inspect for damage
  • ​Explain the component functions together with the correct techniques for mounting and balancing​
  • Dress an abrasive wheel and adjust the tool rest

CAT and GENNY

Duration: 4 hours

Course description & objectives:

This course will provide an in-depth understanding and knowledge of cable avoidance tools and the importance of using them safely and effectively. On completion of the course, students will be able to​:

  • Locate and identify the controls on their chosen equipment and explain their function​
  • Conduct all pre-operational checks following legislation and manufacturer's guidance​
  • Define underground services and identify the different types​
    Demonstrate the correct use of the equipment​
  • Perform all shutdown and end-shift processes​

Working at Height/Ladder Safety

Duration: 1 day

Course description and objectives:

Falls from height are the leading cause of serious injuries in the workplace, but in most cases are avoidable. This course will ensure students can work safely at height with both ladders and steps. By the end of the course, they will be able to:​

  • Outline the responsibilities of both themselves and their employer​
  • Identify the different standards for ladders and steps​
  • Inspect ladders and steps for safety​
  • Describe the hazards relating to working at a height​
  • Demonstrate the correct methods when erecting ladders and steps

Safe Use of Harnesses

Duration: 1 day

Course description and objectives:

This course provides students with knowledge on the safe use and inspection of a fall protection system when working at height, in accordance with Health and Safety guidance and regulations.

The course will cover:

  • The responsibilities of an employee and their employer
  • The different parts of a fall protection system
  • Inspecting safety harnesses and associated equipment
  • Calculating fall distance requirements
  • The correct methods of donning and adjusting a safety harness

Conflict Management

Course description and objectives:

Unfortunately, conflict can be a regular occurrence in front line roles and it is therefore important individuals are able to keep themselves safe and know how to deal with these scenarios.
