How it works

This programme typically consists of block releases, which take place at our Practical Trade Suite in our Derby Academy. Typically, we will work on the basis of a week spent in the Academy followed by three weeks 'in the field', where under supervision, the apprentices can get stuck into the job and build their portfolio.

Our unique learning approach ensures that apprentices not only grasp the theory but also gain practical experience under supervision in a secure environment. They then apply this knowledge in the field, working alongside experienced operatives. We strive to collaborate with your planning and management teams to prepare the apprentice for real-world scenarios, enabling them to work in real homes with real Customers.

Each apprentice is provided with comprehensive support, including virtual and on-the-job 121s and observations with one of our Skills Coaches.

All of this will count towards their off-the-job learning. But this will be supplemented via activities such as:

  • 121s with their manager and/or mentor
  • Attending team meetings and keeping up to date with business communications
  • Any mandatory learning your business offers, such as health and safety and data protection training.

Our Skills Coaches will provide guidance and advice on what can be included and how to record the learning to maximise opportunities and efficiencies.

What it will cover

Learners completing this programme will understand the mechanism of buildings, including electrical, plumbing, plant, safety systems, and equipment. They will learn how to provide a first and immediate response to fault finding while maximising quality and ensuring cost-effectiveness. They will also learn how to prevent major damage that could result in extensive costs and minimise reactive intervention.

Core modules include:

  • Building safety and key regulatory and legislative requirements, including:
    • Understand and demonstrate the importance of health & safety in the workplace and compliance with a diverse sector of client groups
    • Working safely at height and carrying out repairs to the fabric of the building, such as external walls, drainage, guttering, doors, doorframes, skirting boards, or plaster damage to internal walls
    • Plumbing and drainage systems, such as WC systems, leaking taps, water testing and unblocking drains, while maintaining high levels of water hygiene
    • Electrical distribution and repair to adhere to legal requirements, e.g., replacing damaged sockets, plugs, lighting and fuses
    • Damage inspection, preparation and fix of minor repairs to plastering, paintwork, tiling, flooring and joinery such as repairing doors and window fittings
  • Maintaining plant equipment and safety systems
  • Implementing sustainable practices (environmental and energy)
  • Safely use hand tools such as screwdrivers, power drills, pliers, paper strippers and a variety of tools used in plumbing and carpentry
  • The importance and control of resources and stock
  • Principles of planned preventative maintenance
  • Refurbishment or deep cleaning of equipment and surfaces
  • The importance of Customer service
  • Recording and reporting information accurately, either internally or externally
