Supporting the evolving needs of retirement living with Mark

Marks Story

As we all know, the UK’s housing sector is under more pressure than ever before to provide affordable, modern accommodation that meets a range of diverse needs. This is especially true in the retirement living sector, where the demand for tailored housing is growing. Thankfully, people like our Service Coordinator, Mark Ryan, are providing shining examples of how the sector can adapt and be sympathetic to the nation’s changing needs.

Mark has been a dedicated and respected member of our Service Coordinator team for nearly 30 years. With just two jobs throughout his career, his path into this role was unexpected.

“I had just been made redundant from my management job at a supermarket and stepped in to help a friend out temporarily. But I ended up falling in love with the role. The impact you can have on people’s lives is incredible, and even after almost 30 years, I still feel that same pride when I can help someone.”

Mark may work mostly on his own, but he's never truly alone. “I see myself as a bit of a problem solver and, honestly, a bit of a loner. But working for Places for People gives me the tools and freedom to do my job well and make a real difference in our Customers’ lives. Even though I’m often working solo, I rely heavily on the relationships I’ve built across the business over the years. Those connections are key to solving our Customers' challenges and finding the best solutions for everyone.”

For Mark, his role is about more than just problem-solving. "Every day is different, and every Customer has unique needs," he explained. From guiding customers to the right support services to building connections with their families, Mark's work is deeply personal. "I'd say my job is about creating homes for life—places where people feel safe, supported, and understood as their needs and homes evolve with them."

However, Mark’s greatest challenge while working for Places for People has been adapting to the shift from sheltered housing to retirement living.

"I've always been hands-on with Customers, organising activities and staying closely involved in their daily lives, so the transition to retirement living required me to change my approach. Retirement living focuses more on independence, but I still find ways to support my residents—whether it's connecting them with local counselling services or helping them navigate life's transitions," Mark shared.

Mark's dedication shines through in stories like that of one resident who was admitted to the hospital after a bereavement triggered severe mental health struggles.

“This Customer was dealing with hoarding issues and couldn't return home. I just couldn’t let them come back to an environment that wasn’t healthy for their recovery,” Mark explained. “So, I reached out to Colleagues and Community members to help clear out and redecorate their space.” Mark also secured new appliances through our white goods fund and even arranged a care package for their return. His efforts didn’t just offer a fresh start—they were a lifeline.

Mark’s passion for his work hasn’t gone unnoticed. He’s received two Star Awards, recognising the impact he’s had over the years. However, his proudest achievement came when he earned his National Certificate for Housing, despite being severely dyslexic—a challenge he calls his "superpower." With the support of his Colleagues and the CIH, Mark overcame obstacles, showcasing his resilience, determination, and commitment to making a difference in his Community.

Mark’s story isn’t just one of dedication and passion; it’s a reflection of how the housing sector must evolve to meet the changing needs of older Customers. As we rethink support for people in later life, it’s clear that creating homes for life goes beyond bricks and mortar. It’s about understanding each individual’s unique needs, adapting to changes, and ensuring support is there when it’s needed most.

Mark’s experience reminds us that as people age, their needs shift—but with the right support, guidance, and care, they can continue to thrive. Housing professionals like Mark play a vital role in shaping the future of retirement living, ensuring that homes for life aren’t just places to live, but places where people feel empowered, safe, and connected to their Community.
