Places for People set to deliver new homes at Blindwells

Blindwells Planning Outline

Leading social enterprise, Places for People has acquired part of the exciting Blindwells development where it plans to build 135 new homes. As a visionary new town for East Lothian, Blindwells is evolving as a mixed-use neighbourhood with a wide range of amenities and housing options just eleven miles from the centre of Edinburgh. Places for People will deliver 93 homes for private sale and 42 affordable rented homes in a prime location next to the new town centre, bringing more much-needed homes to the local area.

Already establishing a strong presence in Scotland, Places for People is the company behind the award-winning Longniddry Village development, just three miles along the coast. Just as it has successfully done at Longniddry, Places for People has the vision to create a community of high quality, well-designed homes at Blindwells that are designed to suit the needs of a wide mix of customers.

Homes sold on the open market will range in size from two-bedroom apartments to four-bedroom houses, while the affordable housing mix decided in agreement with East Lothian Council will include bungalows, cottage flats and two to four-bedroom houses. All properties will offer flexible, low-maintenance living accommodation with stylish open-plan layouts, energy-efficient features and allocated parking for each home.

In every project that it undertakes, Places for People is committed to going beyond bricks and mortar to ensure it contributes positively to the local community. Not only will Places for People deliver much-needed new homes at Blindwells, it will also generate new jobs for the local area with five new roles created during the construction phase, as well as business for local supply chains and apprenticeships through its construction sub-contractors. It is also planning local schools engagement programmes, as well as initiatives including supporting the local foodbank, donating a defibrillator and extending the children’s play area.

“Places for People is delighted to have the opportunity to build this collection of new homes and help bring to life the vision of Blindwells as an attractive modern town where people will thrive now and in the future. We believe that by creating homes for all in sustainable, multi-tenure communities across Scotland we can positively impact the lives of our customers and their wider communities. We encourage anyone that is interested in the lifestyle on offer at Blindwells to get in touch to find out more.”

Blindwells has been earmarked as the location for a vibrant new town, helped by its convenient location close to the A1 and the East Coast mainline. Places for People purchased the development site from Hargreaves Land, which developed the 1,600-home masterplan for Blindwells and received planning consent for this phase in March. Places for People plans to begin construction on site this month and intends to launch the private sale homes onto the market in January.

Located on the rugged East Lothian coastline, Blindwells benefits from sweeping views across the Firth of Forth and close proximity to the small towns of Tranent and Prestonpans. Direct train services from Prestonpans station, which is just over a mile away, take just 15 minutes to Edinburgh Waverley station. There is also immediate access to the A1 meaning easy access by car to the national road network. The development site is conveniently located next to what will be Blindwells town centre where a wide range of amenities including community space, shops, restaurants, a supermarket and a healthcare hub are under development. For families, there is also a choice of primary and secondary schools in the local area with further education facilities planned, along with extensive green open space including a new park and landscaping.

The new homes at Blindwells from Places for People will be available in early 2025. A show home will launch open next year.
