Breaking stereotypes, building futures: How BuildHer is empowering the next generation of women in trade
06 March 2025
As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we reflect on the strides being made toward Rights, Equality, and Empowerment. At Places for People, we believe in fostering opportunities that empower women and break barriers. One initiative leading the charge is BuildHer, a program designed to inspire young women to explore careers in trade and challenge industry stereotypes.
Bridging the gender gap in trade
Women make up just 15% of the workforce in Places Management, with an even lower representation in skilled trade roles. Industry-wide, the statistics reflect a clear need for change. BuildHer was created to address this disparity by providing hands-on experience to young girls, giving them a glimpse into the possibilities within the trade sector.
Launched on International Day of the Girl (October 11, 2024), BuildHer welcomed young women aged 13-16—daughters and female family members of Places Management Colleagues—for a day of shadowing skilled tradespeople. The experience provided an authentic look at the roles available, from carpentry and plumbing to electrical work and site management.
A day to inspire
The event kicked off with a virtual welcome from Lisa Livingstone, Director of Field Services, setting the tone for a day of empowerment and learning. Throughout the day, participants observed experienced operatives at work, gaining valuable insights into trade professions. The enthusiasm was contagious, with young attendees engaging in supervised activities and documenting their experiences through TikTok-style video content.
Matthew Hewlett, a Places for People Colleague, shared his pride on Viva Engage, saying:
“What an absolute pleasure it was to have my lovely, caring 12-year-old niece, Tilly, take part in the #BuildHER event today in Bristol. We started the day with excitement, and she left inspired, seeing a future where she could one day be part of this industry.”
The impact beyond the day
BuildHer isn’t just about a one-day event; it’s about creating long-term opportunities. Participants were offered employability support, including CV preparation and interview guidance, as well as insights into the Training Academy, PfP Thrive, for 2025/26 apprenticeships. By making these connections early, the initiative ensures that more women feel confident stepping into the trades and securing a sustainable career path.
As Lisa Livingstone reflected:
“Through BuildHer, we’re not only showcasing the diverse opportunities in trade, but we’re also laying the foundation for future talent. Seeing the excitement in these young girls reassures us that the future of trades will be more inclusive and dynamic.”
Celebrating women and driving change
This year’s International Women’s Day theme—Rights, Equality, Empowerment—perfectly aligns with the mission of BuildHer. By breaking stereotypes and giving young women the tools they need to succeed, we’re reinforcing the message that trades are for everyone.
Change starts with awareness, and through initiatives like BuildHer, we are building not just careers, but confidence and ambition. As we continue to drive gender representation forward, we encourage more businesses to open doors, challenge perceptions, and empower the next generation of female trade professionals.
