Big Sister Programme: Championing rights, equality, and empowerment for girls
04 March 2025
As the world marks International Women’s Day under the banner of Rights, Equality, Empowerment, Places Leisure is proud to shine a light on the Big Sister Programme—a transformative initiative helping young girls overcome barriers to sport and wellbeing.
Developed in partnership with Women in Sport and The Places Foundation, the Big Sister Programme tackles the deeply rooted challenges that prevent girls from leading active, healthy, and confident lives. From economic exclusion and body confidence concerns to safety worries, this initiative ensures no girl is left behind.
A movement for change
The Big Sister Programme is helping thousands of girls across the UK build confidence, stay active, and overcome barriers to participation in sport. As of February 2025, 3,242 girls aged 9-15 are on Big Sister memberships, with roughly 52% accessing these for free—ensuring financial constraints don’t stand in the way of their wellbeing.
Beyond memberships, the programme is inspiring Communities to take action. In Wokingham, Big Sister has partnered with the local charity The Cowshed to provide an initial 50 packs of period products to girls eligible for free memberships. Meanwhile, in Northumberland, our team has set up a sports clothing donation point, ensuring that girls struggling to find suitable attire for their sessions have the gear they need to participate with confidence.
By putting girls at the heart of its design and delivery, Big Sister ensures participants feel seen, heard, and empowered to reclaim their right to movement, health, and confidence.
Breaking barriers and building confidence
At its core, the programme creates safe and inclusive spaces where girls can thrive. Dedicated Big Sister Ambassadors—mentors who understand the unique challenges of adolescence—offer guidance and encouragement. Alongside free memberships and activity sessions, Places Leisure provides an innovative Digital Hub featuring on-demand workouts, resources, and real-life stories to inspire participation.
A legacy of empowerment
The impact of the Big Sister Programme extends beyond the numbers. It’s changing mindsets, shaping Communities, and equipping girls with the confidence to embrace physical activity for life. As Places Leisure continues to expand the programme, the commitment to rights, equality, and empowerment remains unwavering.
With future plans including wider national rollout and a sustainable community-led approach, the Big Sister Programme is not just about keeping girls active—it’s about ensuring they grow up knowing they have the right to take up space, to move, to lead, and to thrive.
This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the strength, resilience, and potential of every girl. The Big Sister Programme is proof that when we invest in young women, we invest in a brighter, more equitable future for all.
