Emerging Talent 2020: My first three months

As part of the Group’s ongoing commitment to creating opportunities, we have welcomed the second cohort to our Emerging Talent programme.

The programme, launched in 2019, is designed to equip candidates with a wide range of skills for their future career. This is done through a structured two-year placement working across the Group within their chosen discipline, as well as working towards their own framework and objectives.

So far, the programme has welcomed 39 candidates, with the latest recruits joining us in September 2020. The current cohort comprises of recent graduates, apprentices, career changers and current colleagues joining new teams across the business.

Meet Cameron

Cameron Barnes joined the Group as part of the second Emerging Talent cohort. As Marketing Assistant his role supports the Group’s Marketing and Communications team. We hear about his first three months in the role and what he hopes to learn by the end of the programme.

“My first few months at Places for People have been brilliant – I’ve learnt so much in a short period of time and have been working on live projects which is exactly what I wanted.

“I applied to the Emerging Talent programme largely because I wanted to feel intrinsically rewarded about my work and benefit from structured learning and development. While only a few months in, I can say with certainty that Places for People is allowing me to do just that.

“After completing my eLearning, I have been subscribed to further, more targeted training to boost my marketing proficiency. I can also see how the projects I’ve been working on are delivering social value to customers across the Group.

A strong team

“I think the fact that I worked a couple of other jobs after graduating from university in 2019 has helped with my integration into the role and allowed me to hit the ground running.

“Following a memorable induction week, I’ve been working closely with the cohort on our CEO project, a unique aspect of the programme offering us the opportunity to present our ideas on a set topic to Chief Executive, David Cowans and other senior leaders.

“Together, our 2020 Emerging Talent cohort forms a strong team, with members coming from all walks of life. I’m keen to see what we can achieve across the next two years. I think the cohort is a fair representation of the diversity at Places for People - I’m humbled by the opportunity to work here and very excited to see where the next few years take me.”
