With e-bikes and e-scooters becoming more popular, it’s essential to keep safety in mind, especially when charging or storing them at home. These devices use lithium-ion batteries, which are easy to charge but can be a fire risk if not handled carefully. Here’s everything you need to know to stay safe and keep things running smoothly.

Why do e-bikes and e-scooters sometimes catch fire?
While e-bikes and e-scooters are designed to be reliable and efficient, a few factors can lead to overheating and, in rare cases, fires. The main risks include:
- Low-quality design: Less expensive devices may lack key safety features.
- Faulty batteries: Defective or damaged batteries are more likely to overheat.
- Incorrect charging: Overcharging or using the wrong charger can cause problems.
- Physical damage: If your device has been dropped or bumped, the battery might be compromised.
These issues can cause the battery to release gases, which may ignite and spread quickly. Fires can become especially dangerous if devices are left in shared areas or near exits, potentially blocking escape routes.
E-bike and e-scooter warning signs
Keep an eye out for any unusual signs that your e-bike or e-scooter might need attention—such as a strange smell, colour changes, excessive heat, leaking, or smoke. If you notice any of these, stop using the device and have it checked by a professional, as these could be early signs of a battery issue.
E-bike and scooter charging and storage safety checklist
Keeping yourself and others safe doesn’t have to be complicated. Just follow these steps to reduce risk and ensure your device stays in good working order:
- Choose quality first: When buying your device, battery, or charger, stick to reputable brands certified by a trusted authority.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions: The user manual has tips to help you use and care for your device safely.
- Use the right charger: Stick to the battery and charger that came with your device.
- Avoid overcharging: Unplug your device when it’s fully charged to avoid overheating.
- Avoid charging overnight: Only charge the battery when you would be able to react quickly to a fire and never when you are asleep.
- Avoid charging when the battery is hot: Leave some time between using the battery and charging the battery so the battery has time to cool.
- Charge one device at a time: Avoid plugging in multiple devices at once to prevent overloading.
- Store at room temperature: Keep batteries out of direct sunlight and don’t leave them in hot cars.
- Keep away from children and liquids: Store devices somewhere safe and away from water.
- Charge in a safe space: Avoid charging or storing in communal areas, hallways, or near exits – this can cause an obstruction that could result in damage to your device.
- Use qualified repair services: For any repairs, go with a pro to make sure it’s done safely.
- Recycle responsibly: Dispose of batteries at a recycling centre with the appropriate facilities instead of tossing them in general waste.
What to do if your lithium-ion battery becomes a fire risk
If you ever notice your e-bike or e-scooter’s battery starting to smoke or catch fire, raise the fire alarm, evacuate the premises, and call 999 immediately.
For any signs of battery failure, turn off the device, unplug it right away, and contact the manufacturer or retailer for guidance. It’s also a good idea to report any faulty chargers or batteries to the Citizens Advice Consumer Service - they can offer advice on your consumer rights as well.
