Electric vehicle charging points

Home EV charger installations in Places for People properties

EV Car Charging At Home

As we transition towards the use of Electric Vehicles (EV’s) you may wish to have the convenience and comfort of charging at home. This guide will walk you through the criteria and process of requesting to self-install an EV charge point.

Disclaimer: Your property and parking might not be easily accessible to self-install an EV charge point. At Places for People, you need to request permission to check if your home can have a charge point installed. We advise doing this before purchasing an EV if at home charging is your only charging option.

Frequently asked questions about EV charging

Do I need permission to have an electric vehicle charger installed?

Yes, you must obtain permission from Places for People before a charge point can be installed, as it must meet our criteria.

What is the criteria for EV charger installation?
  • Places for People must own the home and the land on which the charge point is being installed.
  • It must be possible to connect the charge point directly and safely to the home’s electrical supply.
  • For an off-street solution you must have; designated off-street, private parking with a dropped kerb and hardstanding driveway which is for your specific use and property.
  • For an on-street solution, you must provide a pavement cable solution approved by the Local Authority for on-street parking charging.

Here is an example of a permitted installation that would meet our criteria to self install:

What if I am a leaseholder or have a shared ownership/shared equity property?

We advise you to check your lease and apply for permission from Places for People so we can make sure you meet the criteria for EV charger installation.

What if I live in a flat or have communal parking?

Currently we cannot permit self-installs for flats or communal parking areas due to the complexity of parking and future infrastructure requirements.

If you live within a flat and have communal parking, you can complete a short form to register your interest. This will help us establish where the demand for communal EV charging is within our estates.

What if I have on street parking?

If you can have a charge point connected directly to your home but have on street parking, a cable pavement solution would have to be proposed for us to review your application. Permission must be obtained by the local authority/council to permit a cabling solution install.

We advise checking to see if your Local Council is offering a trial on pavement cable solutions.

Can I install a charger if there is a footpath between my parking space and home?

If the home features a public footpath that separates the property from its parking, no charging cable can be laid across the pavement; therefore, a cable pavement solution would have to be proposed as part of the application to avoid hazards.

Can I charge my car using a three-pin plug?

Customers should first check with Places for People to ensure there are no risks associated with charging via this method. To ensure compliance and safety, Places for People strongly recommends that customers apply to have a dedicated EV charge point installed at home. Places for People reserves the right to ask customers to stop charging their EVs using a three-pin plug due to potential hazards.

What if I am provided with an EV through government funding or other applicable schemes?

If you are applicable for an EV through a grant or scheme, you must still make sure you meet the criteria for installing at home charging if you live in a Places for People property.

We recommend that you make sure home charging can be provided. If not speak with the scheme/grant provider to see if they can offer any alternative charging solution or Local Authority charging network access.
