We are pledging to help support Ukrainians arriving in the UK.

At Places for People, we believe in putting people first, and we are pledging to help support Ukrainians arriving in the UK.

We know lots of our customers want to help, and where customers want to offer a spare room, we want to support you to do that safely for you and your family.  This page brings together information for Places for People customers considering this option.

Homes for Ukraine

The government has launched a scheme that will enable individuals to offer accommodation for a minimum of six months to provide a route to safety for Ukrainians, and their immediate family members, forced to escape their homeland.

If you are considering participating in the scheme, please ensure you use official and legitimate organisations to prevent potential fraud.

Information for rental customers

Volunteering a spare room as part of this scheme is a significant commitment, which we want to support customers to do if they wish, and where it is safe and appropriate for them to do so.

Before registering with the Homes for Ukraine scheme, you must contact us to make us aware that you are registering (or if you have already done so).

It is a requirement of your tenancy agreement to obtain consent from your landlord. Where Places for People is not your landlord (for RMG or Touchstone customers), we will liaise with them on your behalf and let you know their decision.

If Places for People is your landlord, we will get in touch to discuss your home and circumstances with you.

Hosting another person or family for 6-12 months is a big commitment, and before offering accommodation through this scheme, you will want to consider:

  • Whether you have enough space in your home
  • The support a guest may need to settle in
  • The requirement to provide accommodation for at least six months
  • Any increase in household costs (e.g. utility bills) that may result from having more people living in your home
  • The terms of your tenancy agreement
  • That you are not permitted to charge your guest any kind of rent during their stay
  • How will you manage visits from friends or family who might usually stay with you from time to time?
Information for shared owners

Offering a spare bedroom as part of this scheme is a significant commitment, which we want to support customers to do if they wish.

Before committing to support a person or family through the Homes for Ukraine scheme, you must contact us.

It is a requirement of your tenancy agreement to obtain our consent.

In accordance with your shared ownership lease, shared owners can offer a room or rooms, but you must also remain living in your home. You cannot move out of your home and allow it to be occupied only by guests while you live somewhere else, as this would be a breach of the terms of your lease.

There are several essential things to think about before volunteering accommodation through this scheme, including:

  • Whether you have enough space in your home
  • The support a guest may need to settle in
  • The requirement to provide accommodation for at least six months
  • Any increase in household costs (e.g. utility bills) that may result from having more people living in your home
  • The terms of your shared ownership lease
  • You are not permitted to charge your guest any kind of rent during their stay
Information for homeowners/leaseholders (100% ownership)

Offering a spare room or a home as part of this scheme is a significant commitment, which we want to support customers to do if they wish.

Before registering with the Homes for Ukraine scheme, you must contact us to make us aware that you are registering for the scheme (or if you have already done so). This may be a requirement of your lease.

Once we hear from you, we will discuss your home and circumstances with you.

You will also need to contact your mortgage provider and discuss this.

Leaseholders who own 100% of their home are usually free to offer a room or their entire house for the scheme, but they should check the terms of their lease.

Other ways you can help

For those who would like to help, the British Red Cross and Disasters Emergency Committee has established a Ukraine Crisis Appeal to provide food, water, first aid, medicine, warm clothes, and shelter.  The British Red Cross and Disasters Emergency Committee Appeal is the most efficient way to get resources to people assisting the humanitarian effort inside Ukraine and across Europe.

Any customers wishing to volunteer accommodation through organisations running similar resettlement programmes for refugees from other countries, such as Refugees at Home and Reset, should contact us.

  • I understand that my Landlord may turn down this application if allowing another person to live at the property exceeds the number of people allowed to live there.
  • I agree not to provide a sub-tenancy or assign this tenancy to the proposed individual I am sponsoring.
  • I acknowledge that I am responsible for the actions of the individual I am sponsoring, so any acts of antisocial behaviour may cause Places for People or my landlord to take action against me.
  • I acknowledge that I am responsible for letting Places for People know the details of the individual(s) I am sponsoring should I be accepted under the Homes for Ukraine Scheme.

Why we are collecting the information 

We are collecting this information to be able to process your application to apply for the Homes for Ukraine scheme.   

How we use the data  

It is in our legitimate interest that we carry out an assessment before we authorise the tenancy being part of the scheme.  

We will collect information about household members* and pets.  This is so we can ensure there is no overcrowding resulting from the hosting, no tenancy enforcement issues at the property or safeguarding issues which may cause issues for either the host or the refugees.  We will check this against your tenancy history with us and we may update your records with information provided to us. We may contact you to go through this information. 

*If you are providing information regarding other household members, it is your responsibility to inform them that their data has been provided for this purpose. 

Please note, if hosting would cause overcrowding, if you have tenancy enforcement issues or we have safeguarding concerns it is likely your request will be declined.  

We will record that you are part of this scheme on our system, and we may share this status with the Local Authority in the future.   

If your application is successful, we may share your contact details with charities or agencies who can support you and your guests.  We would do this under legitimate interest, as it is in all three party’s interest that this activity is supported wherever possible.
